RENDER TIME: It’s so fast; I can’t believe it’s not a Mental Ray Shader

INGREDIENTS:
1 Layered Shader

For the Metal Flakes (optional):

1 Granite or any other procedural texture that uses randomized patterns

DIRECTIONS:
1. Preparing meat and vegetables: First things first
All of the setup work will be done in the Hypershade, so go ahead and open it up (Window->Rendering Editors->Hypershade). The entire shader network will be composed in three different layers and added together in a Layered Shader. If you need more real estate in the Hypershade, you can close the top taps (Tabs->Show Bottom Tabs only). Make sure that your Attribute Editor is open (press CTRL+A) and your Create Bar is visible in the Hypershade (press button “toggle the create bar”).

2. Stuffing the Chicken: Diffuse color
Create a Phong Shader, set the Specular Color to black and the reflectivity very low to something like 0.08. This will make the phong behave similar to a lambert with diffuse shading and almost no reflective value (Why not use a lambert you might ask? because a phong renders faster). Real car paint is of course highly reflective, but the reflections will be driven through a different layer later on. For the base color you will use a ramp in order to represent the changing color of the car surface. Click on the checker map icon right next to the Color value in the attribute editor and from the “Create Render Node” window choose a ramp (under 2d textures, leave texture placement at normal). You can choose any color you like for your car paint, but you should aim for a smooth color variation from light to dark top down. The goal is to emulate the mi_car_paint_phen’s base color and edge color where the center of the ramp is the base color and the bottom of the ramp is a darker shade of the same color (in the Mental Ray shader the edge color is set to black by default, which I personally find too dark). In the following example I have chosen a yellow-orange shade with two anchors for the base color in order to push the color graduation to the edges of the ramp.

If you take a look at the shader preview you’ll notice that the shader just doesn’t look right at the moment. The car paint should be at its lightest value when directly facing the camera and getting darker as it moves away from the viewing angle. This is where the Sampler Info Node comes in handy. In the Create Bar of the hypershade scroll down to General Utilities and click on Sampler Info. In your work area middle mouse drag the sampler Info node on the color ramp and choose “other”. In the Connection Editor choose “facingRatio” for the output value and “vCoord” for the input connection as shown here:

That’s all you need for your diffuse car paint layer. Your shading network should look like this:

3. Putting the bread in the oven: Specular Reflection
Create a Blinn Shader, set Color to black and Transparency to white. This will make the diffuse color disappear completely, which is what we want, since we have already created our diffuse value for the car paint previously. Set the eccentricity to a low value like 0.2 and the specular roll off to a high value like 0.75 which will give you a tight highlight similar to a Phong shader (Why not use a Phong you might ask? because it’s not as physically accurate). The specular color represents the color of your specular highlight and by default reflects the color of your light source. Change it to a color with a slightly lower saturation value than your base color (This is what Mental Ray’s mi_car_paint_phen refers to as the lit color). Next comes the reflectivity which is again dependent on the viewing angle. Car paint becomes more reflective as the surface turns away from the viewer which is also known as the Fresnel effect (pronounced Frenel). Click on the checkermap icon next to the reflectivity and plug in another ramp. This time you only need a black and white ramp with the top being black and the bottom being white. Set the interpolation to “Exponential Down” to keep the reflection to a moderate value. Also, make sure that you don’t move from a pure black to a pure white, because hardly anything in real life is ever completely diffuse or completely reflective. You can use a third anchor to increase area of the midtone value like so:

In order to create the desired Fresnel effect you need to plug in another Sampler Info node using the same procedure as previously described.
Now you need another ramp in order to drive the reflected color. This will affect the overall reflection of your light source across your material and will show extremely well when using Raytracing. Click on the checker map icon next to the reflected color and plug in a ramp. This time you can use a pure black to white ramp with interpolation set to “Exponental Up” like so

Again, you will need to plug another Sampler Info Node into the V Coordinates of your ramp; by now you should know what to do. The network for your specular paint should look somehow like this:

4. It’s all about the side dishes: Metal Flakes
This part is somewhat optional. Not all car paints actually contain visible metal flakes (I know my car doesn’t have any) and unless you are doing close up renders of your car you might not actually need this.
Create a Blinn, set Eccentricity and Specular Roll Off to 0,3 and the Specular Color to the lightest value of your base color (should be the top anchor of your base color ramp). The easiest way to create the flakes is to use a procedural shader. You could use a texture painted in a 2d Image Processing Application, but procedural textures have the advantage of being scalable to any size and save you the process of having to paint the flakes manually. You can use any procedural texture that uses a randomized fractal type pattern; I personally prefer the granite 3d Texture. Plug the Granite into your Blinn’s color input, set the Granite’s Filler Color to the base color of your car paint, and choose any color you like for the Color1, Color2, and Color3 input. The cell size will control the size of your metal flakes; a low value like 0,04 is generally the way to go. Now to more complicate matters: Right now, if you were to start rendering you’d notice that your car was plastered all over with Metal Flakes. With Mental Ray you have a flake decay rate fading out the metal flakes as the car surface gets farther away from the camera. To emulate this effect you will need to make use of the ZBuffer, which requires another Sampler Info node. Furthermore you need a Multiply Divide node which can be found under the General Utilities under the Create Bar. Middle mouse drag the Sampler Info node onto the Multiply Divide node and choose “other”. Plug the PointCameraZ of the Sampler Info node into the input1X of the Multiply Divide node.

The Camera Z Axis goes directly from the camera into your scene and will help to determine the distance from the camera to the objects in the scene. First however, the Multiply Divide Node needs to reverse the value of the Camera Z input. In the attribute editor set the operation of the Multiply Devide Node to “Multiply” and change the first tab of input2 from zero to -1. Now you need to create a Set Range Node which can also be found under “General Utitlities” in the Create Bar. Middle Mouse Drag the Multiply Divide on the Set Range and choose “other”. Connect the outputX to the valueX like so

The samplerInfo Node is now feeding the setRangeNode the Zdepth distance between the camera and objects in the scene. All what is left to do is to translate these values which are in world space into numbers that the transparency node of the Blinn Shader can understand (which requires a value that lies between zero and one). In the SetRange node set the Min Value to 0.4 (so the Flakes will have a maximum opacity of 0.6) and the Max Value to 1 (= full transparency). The old min is the nearest distance where the Flakes are fully visible and the old max is the nearest point where the flakes will completely disappear. The easiest way to get the right values is to make a quick measurement of your scene or play around with the clipping plane values of your camera (don’t forget to reset the values afterwards). You’re almost done. All what is left to do is to connect the outValueX of the SetRange Node to the Transparency R, G, and B input of your blinn shader like so:

5. Putting it all together
It’s time to put the different layers together. Create a Layered Shader, open up its attributes, and drag the Paint Diffuse Phong Shader, the Paint Specular Blinn Shader, and the Metal Flakes Blinn Shader into the red square. Delete the empty layer with the green label and make sure that the shaders are stacked from left to right as followed: Paint Specular, Metal Flakes, Paint Diffuse. The setup should look like this:

That’s it! If you want to you can export the network by selecting all the nodes and going to File->Export Selected Network. That way you can easily reuse the shader for other projects. Here is another image of the entire shading network:

The Apple iPad is a device that is better suited to people who need or want to use mobile computing as well as have the opportunity to use the Internet anywhere without hassle. A good example of how the Apple iPad can be a great mobile computing device is for people who have limited space to carry a notebook while traveling and still want to be connected to their email, various entertainment options and a machine in which they can use to work.

I am in the habit of using having a notebook sitting on my coffee table as I am watching television. If I ever want more information (or want to keep an eye on my email, shares or just fill the advertisement breaks with something fun or interesting) on something I can see, I have an Internet connection right in front of me to do so. This can also be considered a niche that the Apple iPad fulfils.

Based on a true story, My Name is Khan is a movie who’s plot revolves around a Muslim, Rizwan Khan (Shah Rukh) based in San Francisco, who suffers from a rare kind of autism called the Asperger syndrome. Rizwan lives with his brother and sister in law, and later marries Mandira (Kajol) who plays a Hindu single mother. Trouble ensues after the 9/11 attacks, when rifts form between Rizwan and Mandira, resulting in a broken marriage. Things get worse when he is detained by US authorities in California, who mistake his disability for ‘suspicious’ behavior. He is then introduced to a therapist who helps him deal with his misery and encourages him to meet the US president to fight for the injustice done to him.

Contrary to the common misconception, the movie is not based on Islam, but on a simple man’s journey to fight for justice and to win back his love. The movie aims to inspire joy and optimism in people’s hearts and spread the message of goodwill throughout the world.
